Phonobar is a small cocktail bar on Grove Street in Hayes Valley, a few blocks from Davies Symphony Hall and SFJAZZ. The concept is built around vinyl records and quality sound: a turntable behind the bar, curated playlists, and occasional DJ sets. It opened in the 2020s and fills the gap between a cocktail lounge and a listening bar.
What to Expect
The space seats maybe 30 people. The cocktails are well made and priced in the $16 to $19 range. The music is the secondary draw: jazz, soul, funk, electronic, and whatever the bartender or guest DJ feels like spinning. Some nights have scheduled DJ sets. Most nights the music is just the soundtrack to good drinks and conversation.
The interior is warm and dark with comfortable seating. It works as a pre-show drink before Davies or SFJAZZ, a nightcap after dinner in Hayes Valley, or a destination on its own if you’re the kind of person who notices what’s on the turntable.

Getting There
Van Ness Muni Metro station is a few blocks east. The 21 Hayes bus runs one block south. Civic Center BART is about a 10 minute walk. Street parking on Grove and the surrounding Hayes Valley streets is metered and competitive.
Skip this if you want a lively bar scene. Phonobar is quiet and intentional. The volume stays low enough for conversation.
