The Verdict

"A tiny SoMa black box theater run by and for Filipino American artists. Shows are raw, personal, and unlike anything else in the city. Tickets are usually under $20. The space seats maybe 60 people, so book ahead."

What you need to know

Bindlestiff Studio is the only theater in the country dedicated to Filipino American performing arts. It has been operating on Sixth Street in SoMa since 1989, running out of a small black box space that seats about 60 people.

What to Expect

The programming mixes theater, comedy, spoken word, and multimedia performance, most of it created by Filipino American and Filipino diaspora artists. Shows range from original plays exploring immigration and identity to stand up comedy nights and variety shows. The quality is uneven in the way that any small community theater is, but the best nights are genuinely memorable.

The space is tiny. You are sitting close to the performers in a room that feels more like a community center than a traditional theater. That intimacy is part of what makes it work. The audience is usually a mix of Filipino community members and general arts goers.

Skip this if you want a large scale polished production. This is grassroots community theater with a specific cultural mission and a room the size of a living room.
