The Verdict

"A basement music venue below a Swedish American Hall with a storied history. The intimate room and low ceilings make every show feel personal. Sightlines are good from almost anywhere. Check their calendar for jazz, indie, and folk bookings."

What you need to know

Cafe du Nord is a basement music venue underneath the Swedish American Hall on Market Street in the Castro. The original version opened in 1907 as a speakeasy. It closed in 2014, reopened in 2015 under new management, and has been running consistently since. The room holds about 200 and the ceiling is low enough that you’ll feel the bass in your teeth.

What to Expect

The booking is eclectic: indie rock, folk, Americana, electronic, soul, and whatever the booker finds interesting that week. The room is small enough that every show feels like a secret. Dark wood paneling, dim lighting, and a long bar along one wall give it the atmosphere of a place that’s been doing this for a hundred years, because it has.

The sound is surprisingly good for a basement. The low ceilings help rather than hurt. Standing room only for most shows, with a few tables and booths along the sides.

Visiting

2174 Market Street, Castro District. Most shows start between 8 and 10 PM. Tickets typically run $12 to $30. Some shows sell out quickly in a room this small, so buying ahead is smart. The entrance is at street level; you walk down a staircase into the venue.

The Castro has plenty of dining options within a few blocks. Kitchen Story for brunch hours, Anchor Oyster Bar if you’re early enough, or any of the restaurants along Market and Castro Streets.

Getting There

The Castro Muni Metro station (K, L, M lines) is one block away. The F Market streetcar stops nearby on Market Street. From BART, transfer at Church or Castro Muni stations. Street parking on Market Street is metered and limited, but the residential side streets have better availability.

Skip this if you want space to move. The room is small and gets crowded. That’s part of the charm, but claustrophobia is real.

The Castro

A historic Scandinavian lodge hall on Market Street that hosts concerts, comedy, and community events. The upstairs ballroom has great character and decent acoustics. Cafe du Nord operates in the basement. The building feels like a time capsule in the best way.
