El Rio
The Verdict
"A Mission District bar and outdoor patio that's been a queer community gathering spot for decades. The back patio is the main draw, especially on sunny weekend afternoons. Live music and DJ nights happen regularly. The crowd is friendly and the vibe is relaxed."
What you need to know
El Rio has been on Mission Street in the outer Mission since 1978. It started as a Latin music bar and evolved into one of San Francisco’s most important queer community spaces, though the crowd on any given night is mixed in every sense. The main draw is the backyard patio: a large, tree lined outdoor area with picnic tables, a small stage, and the feeling of a house party thrown by someone with good taste.
What to Expect
The calendar rotates between live bands, DJ nights, salsa and cumbia dancing, drag shows, and fundraisers. Sunday afternoon parties are the signature event, drawing crowds that spill between the indoor bar and the backyard starting around 3 PM. Oyster happy hours, comedy nights, and themed dance parties fill the rest of the week.
The bar serves beer, well drinks, and basic cocktails. No craft cocktail program, no food kitchen. The patio has a grill that runs on some event days. The vibe is relaxed, social, and genuinely welcoming to anyone who walks in.
Visiting
3158 Mission Street, Bernal Heights / outer Mission. Open daily. Cover varies by event, typically free to $10. Sunday parties usually have a $5 to $8 cover. Cash is helpful. The bar is small inside but the patio is spacious.
Getting There
BART to 24th Street Mission, then a 15 minute walk south on Mission, or catch the 14 Mission bus. Street parking on Mission is metered. Side streets off Mission in this area are residential and usually have parking available.
Skip this if you want a polished night out. El Rio is a neighborhood bar with a great backyard. That’s exactly why people love it.
