Zeitgeist
The Verdict
"Bloody Mary and a picnic table on the back patio. No photos."
What you need to know
Zeitgeist has a beer list with about 50 options and a back patio that holds a couple hundred people on long wooden communal benches in a gravel lot. The combination is the reason the bar has been a Mission fixture for decades.
The Setup
The front bar is dark, usually packed with people waiting for their orders or watching whatever game is on the televisions. The back is the larger space: a gravel patio with long communal benches. Dogs are welcome. Kids are not. Smoking is permitted outside.
The location at Valencia and Duboce puts Zeitgeist at the edge of the Mission. The building has housed a bar since the 1910s under various names. The current Zeitgeist dates to 1977.
What to Order
The beer list leans toward craft options with a strong showing from local breweries. Anchor Steam on tap. The bartenders can steer you toward a specific style if you ask.
The food comes from a kitchen window facing the patio. Burgers, tamales, sausages. Prices are reasonable.
What to Know
Cash only. An ATM is inside. Service slows when the patio fills.
The crowd shifts through the day. Afternoon draws people from offices and finishing bike rides. Evening brings a younger crowd starting their nights. Weekends in good weather are crowded; expect to share table space.
