The Verdict

"A Mission District theater that centers Latina and women-of-color voices. Productions are bilingual and community-driven. Tickets are affordable and the 24th Street location puts you steps from the best taquerias in the city for a post-show meal."

What you need to know

Brava Theater Center is a 300 seat theater on 24th Street in the Mission that has been producing and presenting work by women, people of color, and LGBTQ artists since 1996. The organization grew out of Brava! For Women in the Arts, a collective founded in 1986.

What to Expect

The programming is theater forward with an emphasis on new work and underrepresented voices. You will see original plays, solo shows, dance performances, and community events. Many productions address social justice themes directly but the work is theatrical, not lecture based. The quality varies because Brava takes chances on emerging artists, but that is also how you catch something genuinely surprising.

The theater itself is a proper venue with raked seating and decent sightlines. It also hosts community events, film screenings, and cultural celebrations that reflect the Mission’s Latino and queer communities.

Visiting

Address: 2781 24th Street, Mission District

Getting There

The 24th Street Mission BART station is a few blocks away. Muni bus lines 48 and 67 stop nearby on 24th Street. Street parking is limited on 24th but side streets usually have spots in the evening.

Skip this if you want mainstream Broadway style theater. This is mission driven work from artists who are telling stories that do not get told elsewhere.
