Coit Tower
The Verdict
"Take the Filbert Steps up from Levi's Plaza for the full experience. The WPA murals inside are free to see on the ground floor. The elevator to the top costs $10 and is worth it on clear days."
What you need to know
Coit Tower rises 210 feet above Telegraph Hill, offering panoramic views of San Francisco Bay and the city below. Lillie Hitchcock Coit left the funds to build it in 1933, and the Art Deco column has defined the North Beach skyline ever since.
The tower itself is free to enter. You can walk into the lobby, admire the murals, and absorb the atmosphere without paying anything. The elevator ride to the observation deck costs a small fee, but the views justify the expense. On clear days you can see from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge, with Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Marin Headlands filling the foreground.
The murals inside deserve attention before you head up. Twenty six artists painted them in 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project. The scenes depict California life during the Depression: farmers, factory workers, city scenes, and newspaper readers. The style echoes Diego Rivera, and some of the political content sparked controversy at the time. Hammers and sickles hidden in the imagery caused particular concern among city officials.
Getting to Coit Tower involves choices. You can drive up and park in the small lot if you find a space. Buses run from downtown. But the best approach involves walking up the Filbert Steps or Greenwich Steps from the Embarcadero. These wooden staircases climb through gardens, past cottages, and alongside wild parrots who have colonized Telegraph Hill. The hike is steep but the scenery makes it worthwhile.
Early morning visits avoid the crowds. Tour buses start arriving mid morning and the observation deck gets packed by afternoon. Sunset draws photographers, so expect competition for viewing spots during golden hour. Foggy days limit visibility but create their own moody atmosphere.
The surrounding Pioneer Park provides space to wander before or after visiting the tower. Benches offer views across the city. Paths wind through trees and gardens. The neighborhood cats who patrol the area have become local celebrities.
Coit Tower works as part of a longer North Beach exploration. Walk up through the gardens, take in the views, then descend toward Washington Square Park and the neighborhood’s restaurants and cafes. The tower anchors one end of a perfect afternoon in this part of the city.
