International Hotel Manilatown Center
The Verdict
"The exhibit is free and easy to pair with a visit to Chinatown and Jackson Square."
What you need to know
A small museum and community space on Kearny Street at the edge of Chinatown, on the site of the original I-Hotel.
What to Expect
The I-Hotel was a residential hotel for elderly Filipino and Chinese immigrants and became the focus of a decade-long eviction fight; tenants were removed by sheriff’s deputies on August 4, 1977. The ground floor now houses a museum documenting Manilatown, the neighborhood once home to thousands of Filipino Americans. Exhibits cover the eviction, Filipino immigration to the West Coast, and the activist movements that grew from the fight. The space is small and self-guided; a visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Getting There
A short walk from the Chinatown-Rose Pak Muni station and Montgomery BART. The 8 Bayshore runs on Kearny; the 30 and 45 run on Stockton, one block west.
