San Francisco Conservatory of Music is a small, highly regarded music school in the Civic Center. It moved to a new campus at 200 Van Ness Avenue in 2020, directly across from Davies Symphony Hall. The building includes a 450 seat concert hall and several smaller recital spaces. The public programs are the reason this matters for visitors.

What to Expect

The Conservatory hosts free and low cost concerts throughout the academic year: student recitals, faculty performances, visiting artists, and ensemble concerts. The quality is high. These are pre-professional musicians in a purpose built concert hall. Chamber music and solo recitals are the strongest offerings.

Most performances are in the evening, with some afternoon events. The concert hall is modern, acoustically excellent, and intimate. Sight lines are good from every seat.

Skip this if you want a guaranteed name on the marquee. These are student and faculty concerts. The upside is hearing talented musicians in a great hall for free.
