Humphry Slocombe

📍 💰 $$ 🍽️ Ice Cream

The Verdict

"Secret Breakfast first, then branch out. The Ferry Building location is convenient but the Dogpatch shop is less hectic. They ship nationwide if you get hooked."

What you need to know

Humphry Slocombe opened in the Mission District in December 2008 with a simple pitch: ice cream for adults who want something more interesting than vanilla. Co-founders Jake Godby (a pastry chef) and Sean Vahey built a brand around flavors that sounded wrong and tasted right. The original Mission shop closed in October 2024. The Ferry Building and Dogpatch locations are still scooping, plus shops in Lafayette and Oakland.

The Food

Secret Breakfast: The signature. Bourbon ice cream with cornflakes mixed in. On the menu since day one. Order it first.
Blue Bottle Vietnamese Coffee: Collaboration with the Oakland-based roaster. Works exactly as well as it sounds.
Bourbon Caramel and Bacon Peanut Brittle: Other permanent flavors that hit the same adult-treat note.

Rotating seasonal flavors lean into the unexpected. The shop is named after characters from the British sitcom Are You Being Served?, which says enough about the tone.

The Space

Ferry Building location is a small counter inside the Embarcadero marketplace, bay views steps away. Dogpatch on 22nd Street has a quieter neighborhood feel.
