Cotogna

📍 💰 $$$ 🍽️ Italian

The Verdict

"The pasta changes daily and it's always the right order. Lunch is easier to get into than dinner. Book through SevenRooms."

What you need to know

Cotogna sits next door to Quince on Pacific Avenue in Jackson Square. Both are run by chefs Michael and Lindsay Tusk. Where Quince is fine dining with a tasting menu, Cotogna (Italian for “quince”) is the rustic Italian sister restaurant most people can walk into without a month of planning. The menu pulls from Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas and changes with what arrives.

The Food

Handmade pasta anchors the menu. Tagliolini with Dungeness crab, agnolotti del plin with rabbit, ricotta raviolo with poached egg yolk, and pappardelle with wild boar ragu rotate through. Wood-oven pizzas include a Little Neck clam version that regulars swear by. Spit-roasted and grilled meats round out the mains. Jenn’s gelato finishes the meal.

The Space

Jackson Square’s brick buildings and quiet streets give Cotogna a setting closer to an Italian neighborhood than most San Francisco restaurants manage. Warm dining room, relatively casual for the caliber of cooking.
