The Verdict

"Walk through the unmarked stairwell off Market and into the old Examiner printing room. Reserve via Resy on a Thursday or Friday for live jazz."

What you need to know

Local Edition occupies the basement of the Hearst Building on Market Street. The space was the printing room of the San Francisco Examiner. Owner Brian Sheehy converted it into a speakeasy with the original printing presses, Underwood typewriters, and newspaper-themed decor still in place. Walk in through a discreet stairwell off the lobby.

The Drinks

Cocktail menu organized by newspaper sections (front page, opinion, sports, entertainment). Cocktails named for journalists and printing terms. House-made bitters, syrups, and infusions. Live jazz several nights a week.

The Space

Low ceilings, banquettes, a long bar, and the print equipment as decor. Dim lighting, leather seating. Larger than most speakeasies, with capacity for around 200.
