This spur adds the summit of Buena Vista Park, about 30 minutes round trip from Haight Street. Take the central staircase up from the park entrance at Haight and Baker, then follow the paths that bear right toward the western side.
The drainage gutters along the western paths are the ones built by Works Progress Administration crews in the 1930s from broken Victorian cemetery headstones, described at the start of this tour. Up here you can study them at walking pace. Some stones were laid inscription-side up. Look down as you walk and you can still read names, dates, and fragments of epitaphs.
Continue to the summit at 588 feet. The view, fog permitting, takes in Twin Peaks, downtown, the Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the full spread of the Richmond and the Sunset. Come down the western side toward Buena Vista Avenue West, which puts you a short block from the Richard Spreckels Mansion at 737 Buena Vista West if you’re walking the spurs in order.
The paths can be muddy after rain. Wear shoes that handle dirt.
