A half block from Balmy Alley, Precita Eyes Muralists is the reason much of what you just saw exists. Founded in 1977 by Susan Cervantes, it is one of the few community mural centers in the country: part art-supply store, part classroom, part commissioning organization. Its artists painted and still maintain murals across the Mission, including many in Balmy Alley and the Maestrapeace on the Women’s Building earlier on this route.
The storefront sells supplies and prints, and the center runs mural classes for kids and adults. On weekends, Precita Eyes guides lead walking tours of the alley murals with the backstories straight from the source; check their schedule if you want the deeper layer. Open daily.
