De Young Opens ‘A Gallery of Their Own’ on August 15 With Bourgeois, Krasner and Kusama

The de Young Museum opens A Gallery of Their Own: Women Artists from the Carr and Goldblum Gift on August 15, 2026. The show runs through February 28, 2027 and draws entirely on work by women artists active since the 1960s, according to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco 2026 advance schedule.

The named artists include Louise Bourgeois, Judy Dater, Jay DeFeo, Lee Krasner and Yayoi Kusama. The museum describes the selection as photography, printmaking and drawing, with several works that sit in a surrealist vein, others that take a sculptural approach to paper, and others that map the natural world.

The works come from the promised gift of Michael Carr and Peter Goldblum, two local collectors. That is the part worth noting for anyone who follows Bay Area collections: a promised gift means the museum expects to keep these pieces, so this is a first public look at holdings the de Young plans to show again.

How it fits the de Young’s fall

August 15 lands two weeks after Treasures of the Pharaohs opens on August 1, and the Egypt show is the ticketed blockbuster of the season. The two run alongside each other until the Pharaohs show closes on January 31, 2027, so a single visit in the fall can cover both.

The de Young also has Nengi Omuku’s The Gathering in its Arts of Africa galleries through May 14, 2028, and adds Superficial Matters: Artists from the Svane Gift and Beyond on September 5, 2026. Across the park at the Legion of Honor, The Etruscans closes September 20 and Drawn to Venice closes August 16, so mid-August is the point where the two museums are at their fullest.
