The pedestrian bridge between Piers 15 and 17, beside the Exploratorium, periodically disappears. Fog Bridge #72494 is an installation by Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya, who has built fog sculptures around the world since 1970; this one shrouds the 150-foot bridge in dense manufactured mist from hundreds of high-pressure nozzles, on a timed schedule through the day.
San Francisco is the right city for it: Nakaya’s fog behaves like the real thing, drifting and tearing with the wind off the bay, so the piece is different every time it runs. Walking through is free and takes a minute. The number in the title is the project number Nakaya assigns each fog work by location.
If the bridge is dry when you arrive, give it a few minutes; the cycles repeat through open hours.
