American Conservatory Theater (ACT)

The Verdict

"ACT runs two theaters downtown. The Strand is the bigger house with touring shows. Toni Rembe is the intimate one for local premieres. Check the season calendar early because subscriber seats eat up most of the house."

What you need to know

ACT has been producing theater in San Francisco since 1965. It operates two venues downtown: the Toni Rembe Theater (the ornate 1910 building on Geary Street that most people picture when they think of ACT) and the Strand Theater on Market Street (a restored 1917 movie palace used for newer and more experimental work). The company also runs a conservatory that’s trained actors you’ve seen in movies and TV.

What to Expect

The season typically includes six to eight productions split between the two theaters. The Toni Rembe gets the bigger, more traditional productions: classic plays, musicals, and established contemporary work. The Strand handles world premieres, adaptations, and shows that take more risks. If you’re choosing between the two, the Strand tends to be the more interesting evening.

ACT is a major regional theater with professional actors and high production values. Sets are real, costumes are designed for the production, and the directors are often names you’d recognize from Broadway or major film work.

Visiting

Toni Rembe Theater: 415 Geary Street, Union Square. The Strand Theater: 1127 Market Street, Mid-Market. Shows typically run Tuesday through Sunday with matinees on weekends. Tickets range from $25 to $110 depending on seat and production. Under 35 pricing and rush tickets are available for most performances.

The Geary Street location puts you in the middle of Union Square dining. The Strand is on Market Street, where the neighborhood has improved but still feels transitional after dark. Plan accordingly.

Getting There

Both theaters are walkable from Powell BART and Muni Metro. The 38 Geary bus runs directly past the Toni Rembe. The Strand is close to the Civic Center BART station as well. Union Square Garage is the closest parking for the Toni Rembe. The 5th and Mission garage works for the Strand.

Skip this if you’re looking for fringe or experimental. ACT is polished mainstream theater done at a high level. For the edgier end, check Magic Theatre or the Strand specifically.
