Golden Gate Theatre

The Verdict

"A grand SHN theater in the Tenderloin that hosts touring Broadway productions. The orchestra and front mezzanine seats are worth the splurge. Upper balcony is steep but cheap. Take BART to Civic Center and walk one block. Street parking is a nightmare on show nights."

What you need to know

The Golden Gate Theatre opened in 1922 as a movie palace, and the interior still reflects that ambition. The ceiling is painted to look like a Spanish courtyard sky. The lobbies are marble. The whole place was built to make people feel important for a few hours. Today it hosts touring Broadway productions, the same shows that play New York months earlier.

What to Expect

This is where the big musicals land in San Francisco. Hamilton, Wicked, Dear Evan Hansen, and similar productions rotate through on national tours. A typical run lasts two to four weeks. The theater seats about 2,500, which means even a moderately popular show has tickets available if you plan a week or two ahead.

The orchestra and front mezzanine seats offer the best views. The upper balcony is steep and far from the stage, but the tickets are significantly cheaper. Sound carries well throughout the room.

Concessions are overpriced. The restroom lines during intermission are long. Neither of these facts will surprise anyone who has been to a Broadway show.

Visiting

1 Taylor Street, Tenderloin (at Market and Golden Gate). Evening shows typically start at 7:30pm. Matinees on Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday at 2pm depending on the production. Ticket prices range from $50 for upper balcony to $200+ for premium orchestra.

Buy through BroadwaySF.com or at the box office. The BroadwaySF box office on Post Street sometimes has day of rush tickets at reduced prices.

Getting There

BART and Muni Metro to Powell Street station. The theater is a two minute walk east on Market. The 6th and Mission garage is the closest paid parking. The Tenderloin surrounds the theater on three sides. Walk directly from transit to the entrance and you will be fine, but the neighborhood is not one for casual strolling after dark.
