Herbst Theatre
The Verdict
"A formal Civic Center concert hall inside the Veterans Building with outstanding acoustics. Hosts City Arts & Lectures, chamber music, and recitals. The seats are comfortable and the sightlines are good throughout. Dress is smart casual to formal depending on the event."
What you need to know
The United Nations Charter was signed inside Herbst Theatre on June 26, 1945. That’s the most important thing that ever happened in this building, and nothing else is likely to top it. Since then it has settled into its role as a 928 seat performance hall inside the War Memorial Veterans Building on Van Ness Avenue.
What to Expect
The room is Beaux Arts from 1932. High ceilings, warm wood, and enough formality to make you sit up a little straighter. It hosts chamber music, author talks (City Arts & Lectures runs a popular series here), recitals, film screenings, and the occasional civic event. The acoustics suit spoken word and smaller ensembles well. A full orchestra would overpower the space.
The seating is all reserved, and there’s not a truly bad seat in the house. The first balcony center offers the best overall sound and sightline.
Visiting
401 Van Ness Avenue, Civic Center (inside the Veterans Building, next door to the War Memorial Opera House). Events vary widely. City Arts & Lectures tickets typically run $25 to $45. Music performances range from $30 to $75. Check the specific presenter’s website since multiple organizations use the space.
The lobby is small and the concession options are limited. If you want a drink or dinner, Hayes Valley is a five minute walk west and has more restaurants per block than almost anywhere in the city.
Getting There
Civic Center BART and Muni Metro station is two blocks east. The 49 Van Ness bus stops in front of the building. Van Ness Avenue has limited street parking, but the Civic Center Garage underneath Civic Center Plaza is the most convenient option.
Skip this if you’re looking for a big night out with energy and crowds. This is a refined, quiet room. That’s the appeal.
