The Verdict

"An Irish pub in the Richmond with live traditional music sessions. The music nights draw real musicians, not background performers. The crowd skews local and friendly. Check their schedule for session nights, which are usually midweek."

What you need to know

Ireland’s 32 is an Irish pub on Geary Boulevard in the Richmond District, named for the 32 counties of Ireland. It has been one of the few places in the city where you can reliably hear live traditional Irish music on a regular basis.

What to Expect

The draw is the music sessions. Local musicians show up with fiddles, tin whistles, guitars, and bodhrรกns for traditional Irish sessions that feel more like a gathering than a performance. The sessions are informal. Sometimes it is three people. Sometimes the room is packed and everyone is singing along.

Outside of session nights, this is a straightforward neighborhood pub. Pints of Guinness, friendly bartenders, Irish memorabilia on the walls, and a crowd of regulars who actually live in the Richmond. It is not a tourist pub and it does not try to be one.

Visiting

Address: 3920 Geary Boulevard, Richmond District
Hours: Daily, afternoons through late night
Cost: No cover for music sessions. Standard bar prices for drinks.
Tips: Check their schedule for live music nights. Sessions are not every night.

Getting There

Muni bus lines 38 and 38R run directly along Geary Boulevard and stop nearby. Street parking on Geary is metered during the day and generally available in the evenings. This part of the Richmond is not close to BART. The nearest station is about a 20 minute bus ride east.

Skip this if you want a high energy nightclub. This is a neighborhood pub with live music, not a concert venue.
