What you need to know

The de Young Museum sits in Golden Gate Park and has been operating since 1895, when it opened as a permanent home for the collection from the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. M.H. de Young, publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle, donated much of the original art. The Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron designed the current copper-clad building after the previous structure was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The new museum opened on October 15, 2005. The Hamon Observation Tower gives 360-degree views of the park, the ocean, and downtown. Free admission on the first Tuesday of every month.
