Joe Goode Annex
The Verdict
"A small rehearsal and performance space in SoMa used by Joe Goode Performance Group and visiting dance companies. Shows are intimate and experimental. Tickets are affordable. The space is bare-bones, which keeps the focus entirely on the performers."
What you need to know
The Joe Goode Annex is a flexible studio theater on Alabama Street in the Mission, run by the Joe Goode Performance Group. The company has been creating dance theater in San Francisco since 1986, and the Annex serves as both their performance home and a rehearsal space for the broader Bay Area dance community.
What to Expect
This is a studio, not a theater in the traditional sense. The room gets reconfigured for each production, which means you might be sitting on risers one night and standing in a circle the next. That flexibility is the point. The work here is experimental and often blurs the line between dance, theater, and spoken word.
Joe Goode’s own work tends to be narrative and emotionally direct. Guest artists who rent the space vary widely. Either way, you are close to the performers. If you are curious about contemporary dance but intimidated by it, this is a low pressure way in. The scale is small and the atmosphere is informal.
