San Francisco Opera
The Verdict
"World-class opera at the War Memorial Opera House in the Civic Center. Standing room tickets are the affordable way in. The balcony has surprisingly good acoustics. The fall season runs September through December. Dress code is relaxed despite the grand setting."
What you need to know
San Francisco Opera has been running since 1923, making it the second oldest opera company in the United States after the Met in New York. It performs at the War Memorial Opera House, a 3,100 seat Beaux Arts theater on Van Ness Avenue that was originally built for the company.
What to Expect
The main season runs from September through December, with a shorter summer season in June and July. A typical season includes six to eight productions mixing standard repertoire (Puccini, Verdi, Mozart, Wagner) with newer works and occasional world premieres. Productions are fully staged with orchestra, sets, and costumes. Surtitles in English are projected above the stage for all performances, including operas sung in English.
If you’ve never been to an opera, start with something short and popular. La Bohรจme, Carmen, or The Marriage of Figaro are all good entry points. Wagner runs four hours. You have been warned.
The orchestra and front dress circle seats offer the best combination of sound and sightlines. The upper balcony is a long way from the stage, but the sound carries well and the prices are reasonable.
Visiting
301 Van Ness Avenue, Civic Center. Tickets range from $26 for standing room to $350+ for premium orchestra seats. $10 standing room tickets go on sale the morning of each performance. Rush and discount programs exist for students and people under 40.
Hayes Valley is the go to pre-show neighborhood, a five minute walk west on Grove or Hayes Street. Most curtain times are 7:30 PM. Plan for a two and a half to three hour evening for standard repertoire, longer for Wagner and some Russian works.
Getting There
Civic Center BART and Muni Metro station is two blocks east. The 49 Van Ness and 47 Van Ness buses stop nearby. Civic Center Garage under Civic Center Plaza is the closest parking. Rideshare pickup after performances is chaotic on Van Ness. Walk a block to a side street for faster pickup.
Skip this if you need constant action. Opera moves at its own pace. The reward is in the voices and the music, not the plot speed.
