Z Space

📍 The Mission District 💰 $$

The Verdict

"A Mission District theater that develops and premieres new plays, often with an experimental edge. The space is intimate and the company takes creative risks. Tickets are affordable and some performances offer pay-what-you-can nights. Worth watching their season announcements."

What you need to know

Z Space is a performing arts development organization on Florida Street in the Mission. Since 1993, it has operated as a place where theater, dance, and interdisciplinary work gets built from scratch. The focus is on new work. Most of what you see here is in development or having its first full production.

What to Expect

The theater is a flexible black box that gets reconfigured for each production. Some shows use traditional seating. Others put you in the middle of the action or move you through the space. The programming leans experimental and interdisciplinary. You might see a devised theater piece one week and an immersive dance installation the next.

Z Space also co-produces with other Bay Area companies, so you will sometimes see work from organizations like Word for Word, Shotgun Players, or other groups that use Z Space as their San Francisco home. The quality is generally high because the development process is thorough. Artists get time and resources here that most small companies cannot afford.
