Original Joe’s
What you need to know
Original Joe’s opened on Taylor Street in the Tenderloin in 1937 and moved to Washington Square in North Beach in 2012 after a fire destroyed the original location. The same family has run it since the start. Red leather booths, white tablecloths, an open mesquite grill, and a menu of Italian-American classics that have not changed in eighty years.
The Food
Joe’s Special: Ground beef, spinach, eggs, onion, scrambled together. The dish San Francisco invented.
Veal Piccata: House standard.
Steaks: Mesquite-grilled, properly aged.
Hangtown Fry: Gold Rush-era oyster omelet on the menu since 1937.
Spaghetti and Meatballs: The reason regulars keep coming back.
The Space
Two floors looking onto Washington Square Park. The downstairs counter overlooks the open mesquite grill. Upstairs has booths with views of Saints Peter and Paul Church across the park.
