The Verdict

What you need to know

Fort Mason Center is a former Army base on the waterfront between Fisherman’s Wharf and the Marina. The military left in the 1970s and the buildings were converted into a sprawling arts and culture campus. Theaters, galleries, nonprofits, and event spaces fill the old warehouses and pier buildings. On any given weekend, you might find an art fair, a food festival, a theater production, and a yoga class all happening within a few hundred yards of each other.

What to Expect

The campus hosts several permanent tenants including the Magic Theatre, BATS Improv, the Long Now Foundation, and a collection of galleries and small museums. The farmers market runs on Sundays from March through December. Off the Grid food truck events show up periodically. The Italian Cultural Institute, the Mexican Museum, and several other organizations maintain space here.

The buildings themselves are utilitarian. Do not expect polished architecture. The appeal is the combination of programming, waterfront location, and the views. The piers look directly at the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. The Great Meadow, a large lawn between the upper and lower fort, is one of the best picnic spots in the city.

Visiting

2 Marina Boulevard, Marina District. The campus is open daily. Individual venues and events have their own hours and admission prices. Entry to the grounds is free. Parking is available in the Fort Mason lots for a fee during events.

Check fortmason.org for the events calendar. The campus is big enough that you should know what you are looking for before you arrive. Wandering works on event days. On quiet days you might find everything closed.

Getting There

The 30 Stockton bus and the 28 19th Avenue bus stop at the upper Fort Mason entrance. Walking from Fisherman’s Wharf takes about 15 minutes along the waterfront path. From the Marina, enter through the main gate on Marina Boulevard. The campus is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the Bay Trail runs right through it.
