Lafayette Park is a hilltop green bounded by Washington, Sacramento, Gough, and Laguna. For decades in the 19th century it was the site of a legal battle: a city attorney named Samuel Holladay built a house on the public parkland and refused to leave, holding the hilltop for nearly 50 years until the city finally cleared the land in 1936.
The park is one of the high points of Pacific Heights, with views north to the bay and Marin. It is surrounded by some of the most expensive real estate in the city, including the Spreckels Mansion on its north edge. The paths up are steep.
