Saturday starts early. The Alemany market opens at 7am, the Ferry Plaza market at 8am, and a free timed 5K sets off across Sunset Dunes at 8 sharp. In the evening there is 40-year-old improv at Fort Mason and two stand-up shows near Union Square.
Ferry Plaza Farmers Market
The Saturday Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is the flagship: 8am to 2pm, year-round, with more than 100 farmers and food vendors on both sides of the Ferry Building. Go early for the full selection. See our Ferry Building guide for the shops inside and how to get there.
Alemany Farmers Market
The Alemany Farmers Market runs Saturdays 7am to 2pm, year-round, at 100 Alemany Boulevard in Bernal Heights. Opened in 1943, it is the oldest farmers market in California. Prices run lower than at the Ferry Building.
Sunset Dunes parkrun
parkrun holds a free, timed 5K every Saturday at 8am at Sunset Dunes, the oceanfront park on the former Upper Great Highway. Walkers, joggers, and runners are all welcome; register once online, bring your barcode, and join the post-run coffee at Java Beach Cafe.
Free Saturdays at the de Young and Legion of Honor
Every Saturday, the de Young and the Legion of Honor offer free general admission to residents of the nine Bay Area counties. Book online, bring ID, and note that special exhibitions are still ticketed and the program pauses during Bouquets to Art week. Visitors 17 and under are always free.
Improv at BATS, Stand-Up Downtown
BATS Improv, performing for 40 years, stages Saturday-night shows most weeks at the Bayfront Theatre in Fort Mason Center, Building B. Showtimes and tickets are on their site. Near Union Square, Cheaper Than Therapy runs two Saturday stand-up shows, 7:45 and 9:45pm, at the Shelton Theater on Sutter Street.
Skating, Outdoors and In
The Skatin’ Place at 6th Avenue and JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park draws skaters Saturdays from 1 to 5pm (until 6pm during daylight saving time), free. Church of 8 Wheels on Fillmore Street runs indoor all-ages sessions at 2:30 and 4:30pm and an 18-and-over night from 7 to 11pm.
SF Mime Troupe in the Parks (Summer)
The San Francisco Mime Troupe performs a free show in parks around the city every summer, mostly on weekend afternoons at 2pm with live music 30 minutes before. Admission is free; donations support the company. The current season’s schedule is at sfmt.org.
Saturday Morning Yoga at Grace Cathedral
Grace Cathedral holds a Saturday morning Yoga on the Labyrinth session at 9am (doors 8:30am); check the cathedral’s calendar for pricing and registration.
Free Second Saturdays at MoAD
The Museum of the African Diaspora at 685 Mission Street offers free admission on the second Saturday of each month.
