Anglers Lodge & Casting Pools
The Verdict
"Free lessons on weekends, no reservation needed. Members hand you a set of bowls and teach you on the green. One of the quietest corners of Golden Gate Park, near the conservatory. A genuinely relaxing hour."
What you need to know
A Fishing Club in the Middle of a City Park
The Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club has operated out of a stone lodge in Golden Gate Park since 1933. Founded in 1906, it’s one of the oldest casting clubs in the country. Members practice fly casting on three concrete pools tucked between the park’s trees, just west of the bison paddock.
The lodge itself is a WPA-era stone building with a rustic charm that feels closer to a Sierra fishing camp than a San Francisco park. On weekends, you can watch club members practicing distance casting and fly presentation on the pools, a surprisingly meditative thing to stumble across during a park walk.
What Makes It Worth It
The club offers free casting lessons on Saturday mornings, no experience or equipment needed. It’s one of the few places in San Francisco where you can try fly casting without committing to a guided trip or buying gear. The instructors are patient, the setting is quiet, and the whole experience takes about an hour.
Even if you don’t cast, the pools and lodge are worth a detour. The area is one of the least-visited corners of Golden Gate Park, and the sight of someone unfurling a fly line across a still pool is unexpectedly calming.
Skip this if you have zero interest in fishing. There’s not much else here besides the pools and the lodge.
