What you need to know
What’s There
A staircase covered in mosaic tile risers connects 32nd Avenue and California Street to Lincoln Park above. The mosaic work is by artist Aileen Barr, who also designed the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps in the Sunset. The Beaux-Arts tile patterns reference the era when the stairs were first built in the early 1900s. The current tile installation was added in two phases: the top retaining wall and bench in 2010, and the stairs themselves in 2015.
From the top, you’re steps from the Legion of Honor (a fine arts museum in a Beaux-Arts building), the Lincoln Park golf course, and the Lands End trailhead. It’s a 5-minute climb. Pair it with a visit to the Legion or a walk on the Lands End Trail.
