Uji Time Dessert

The Verdict

"Get the taiyaki cone with matcha soft serve. That's the essential order. The Japantown location has more charm; the Metreon location is more convenient."

What you need to know

Uji Time was the first shop in the Bay Area to serve taiyaki ice cream. It opened as a pop-up in April 2016 and now has stores in San Francisco’s Japantown and South of Market plus locations in Berkeley, Seattle, and Albuquerque. The signature is Japanese soft serve in a fish-shaped taiyaki cone.

The Food

Soft serve flavors include matcha, black sesame, hojicha, and red bean, made fresh daily. Taiyaki cones are baked to order. Toppings range from mochi to red bean to candied chestnuts. Lychee ice cream mochi, Earl Grey pudding, and pints to take home round out the menu.

The Fish Cone (a soft serve in the taiyaki shell) is the order to start with.

The Space

Both San Francisco shops are small counter operations. The Japantown location is on the upper level of Peace Plaza with a few seats nearby. The SoMa store on 4th Street has more of a quick-stop format.
