What you need to know

The bookstore

The selection spans adult and children’s books, with a focus on authors from underrepresented communities. Staff recommendations are handwritten and personal, not algorithmically generated. If you are looking for something specific, ask. The staff knows the inventory and can point you to titles you would not find on your own.

The cafe

The cafe serves coffee and light food from 7am daily. It is a real neighborhood spot. People come in with laptops, dogs wait outside, regulars know the baristas by name. The coffee is solid without being fussy about it.

Community events

Black Bird runs a rotating art gallery with monthly exhibitions, open mic nights, flea markets, and a recurring “Games + Pie Night” on the third Wednesday of each month. There are also regular storytimes for kids. The programming turns the bookstore into a neighborhood gathering space.

Getting there

The store is at 4541 Irving Street between 45th and 46th Avenues. The N-Judah Muni line runs along Judah Street, one block south, with a stop nearby. If you are driving, street parking on Irving is usually available in this part of the Sunset. Pair a visit with a walk on Ocean Beach, which is a 10-minute stroll west.
