Brick and Mortar Music Hall
The Verdict
"A scrappy Mission bar venue that books indie rock, punk, and experimental acts. The room is small and loud, which is the point. No reserved seating. Cash helps at the bar. Shows start on time, so don't be late."
What you need to know
Brick and Mortar Music Hall is on Mission Street between 18th and 19th in the Mission District. The room holds about 200 people and the stage is barely elevated above the floor. On a crowded night, you’re close enough to bump elbows with the bassist. The venue opened in 2011 and has been one of the more reliably well booked small rooms in the city since.
What to Expect
The booking covers indie rock, garage, punk, electronic, hip hop, and the kind of genre fluid acts that San Francisco tends to produce. The room is small enough that sound fills the space naturally, and the system is well tuned. The bar runs along one wall. There is no reserved seating, no VIP area, and no balcony. Everyone shares the same room.
The venue also hosts comedy, DJ nights, and the occasional private event. Check the calendar before showing up assuming it’s a music night.
Visiting
1710 Mission Street, Mission District. Tickets typically run $10 to $20. Some shows are free. Doors usually open between 8 and 9 PM. The bar is full service. No food.
The surrounding blocks on Mission have plenty of taquerias and restaurants for pre-show eating. El Farolito and Taqueria Cancun are both a short walk south.
Getting There
16th Street Mission BART is a 5 minute walk east. The 14 Mission bus runs directly past the venue on Mission Street. Street parking on Mission is metered and limited, but 18th and 19th Streets have residential parking.
Skip this if you need personal space or want table service. The room is small and gets packed. That’s the whole point.
