Gray Area Foundation for the Arts
The Verdict
"Often closed for private events, so go for public shows or the gallery. Join the mailing list for upcoming exhibitions."
What you need to know
A nonprofit art and technology center based in the historic Grand Theater on Mission Street, running exhibitions, performances, workshops, and educational programs out of the renovated 1940s theater.
What to Expect
Programming rotates between exhibitions, performances, workshops, and public talks. Exhibitions are often immersive and interactive, including projection mapping, generative sound, and work that responds to viewer presence. Gray Area also runs classes in creative coding and projection mapping, open to beginners. The space is not open for walk-in visits, so public events and open houses are the easiest way to see it.
Getting There
24th Street Mission BART is about a 5-minute walk south. The 14 Mission and 49 Van Ness/Mission run on Mission.
