The Verdict

"An experimental music space in the Tenderloin where you'll hear compositions you won't encounter anywhere else. Concerts are often free or donation-based. The audience is small and attentive. Go with open ears and no expectations."

What you need to know

Center for New Music is a small performance and gallery space in the Tenderloin that programs experimental and contemporary music. If your idea of a good time is watching someone play a prepared piano or listening to a 40 minute drone piece, this is your room.

What to Expect

The programming covers a wide range of what gets loosely called new music: electroacoustic composition, noise, sound art, experimental improvisation, and contemporary classical. Shows happen several nights a week and often feature Bay Area composers performing their own work. The audience is small and engaged. Most people in the room know what they are there for.

The space itself is a single room with good acoustics and flexible seating. It also functions as a gallery for sound installations between concerts. The atmosphere is welcoming despite the challenging nature of the music. If you are curious about experimental sound but have never attended a concert like this, the staff and regulars are happy to point you in the right direction.

Visiting

Address: 55 Taylor Street, Tenderloin
Capacity: About 60 to 80 depending on configuration
Cost: $5 to $20 sliding scale for most events. Some are free.
Tips: Check the calendar online. Shows start on time because the room is small and latecomers are disruptive.

Getting There

Powell BART station and the Powell Muni Metro stop are both about a five minute walk. Multiple Muni bus lines run along Market Street nearby. Street parking in the Tenderloin is available but the neighborhood can feel rough at night. Transit or rideshare is recommended.

Skip this if you want conventional music in a conventional setting. This is experimental sound for people who are genuinely curious about where music goes next.
