The Verdict

What you need to know

A White Alligator in Golden Gate Park

Claude is an albino American alligator living in the Swamp exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences. He arrived in 2008 from a captive breeding facility in Florida and has been one of the Academy’s most recognizable residents since. His white skin and pink eyes are the result of albinism, a condition so rare in alligators that fewer than 100 are known to exist.

What Makes It Worth It

Claude is immediately striking. Most visitors walk past dozens of exhibits and then stop cold at the Swamp. He spends most of his time floating motionless in shallow water, occasionally shifting position with surprising speed. The exhibit includes fish, turtles, and other swamp species, but Claude is the draw.

The Academy uses Claude as a teaching tool for wetland conservation. Albino alligators can’t survive in the wild. Their lack of camouflage makes them easy prey, and their skin burns in direct sunlight. Claude’s enclosure is carefully temperature- and light-controlled.

Worth noting: Claude is part of the California Academy of Sciences, which requires a separate admission ticket. If you’re already visiting the Academy, Claude is a guaranteed highlight. If you’re coming just for him, you’ll want to explore the rest of the museum too. The aquarium, rainforest dome, and planetarium are all in the same building.

Skip this if you’re not planning a full Academy visit. Claude alone doesn’t justify the admission price.
