Kilowatt Bar

The Verdict

"A no-frills Mission bar with a good jukebox, cheap drinks, and occasional live music in the back. The patio is the main draw when it's warm. Pool table up front. This is a neighborhood hangout, not a destination bar. Go on a weeknight for a mellow vibe."

What you need to know

Kilowatt is a dive bar on 16th Street in the Mission. Pool tables, a jukebox, cheap drinks, and a backyard patio. It’s been here long enough to predate most of the changes the neighborhood has gone through, and it hasn’t changed with them.

What to Expect

Two pool tables in the back, a long bar up front, and a covered patio behind the building. The drinks are strong and cheap by San Francisco standards. Beer and shots are the move here, not cocktails. The jukebox plays whatever the last person paid for.

There’s no live music, no cover charge, and no agenda. This is a bar where people come to drink, shoot pool, and talk. The crowd is a mix of Mission District regulars, service industry workers off shift, and people who prefer a bar that doesn’t try to impress.

Visiting

3160 16th Street, Mission District. Open daily, usually from 3 PM to 2 AM. No cover. Drinks are $6 to $10. Cash and card accepted. The patio is the best spot on warm evenings.

Getting There

16th Street Mission BART is a short walk east. The 22 Fillmore and 49 Van Ness buses stop nearby. Street parking on 16th is limited but the residential streets north of 16th have options.

Skip this if you want craft cocktails or a curated atmosphere. This is a dive bar. The pool tables are good, the patio is real, and the drinks don’t cost $18.
