"A large SHN theater in the Civic Center hosting touring Broadway musicals. The ornate 1920s interior is worth seeing on its own. Orchestra center seats are the best experience. Parking garages on Grove Street fill up fast, so take BART to Civic Center instead."
What you need to know
The Orpheum Theatre opened in 1926 on Market Street, and the Spanish Colonial Baroque interior looks like someone built a cathedral and then decided to stage musicals in it. The ceiling alone is worth the price of admission. Like the Golden Gate Theatre down the street, the Orpheum hosts touring Broadway productions, often running the same shows a season apart.
What to Expect
The Orpheum seats about 2,200 and tends to host the slightly edgier or more intimate Broadway shows compared to the Golden Gate. The room feels warmer and smaller despite the size. Sightlines from the orchestra and lower mezzanine are excellent. The upper balcony is steep but workable.
The lobby is compact. Plan to arrive 20 minutes before curtain to avoid the crush at the doors. Concessions are limited and expensive. Eat beforehand in Hayes Valley, a few blocks west, where the restaurant options are much better and the walk is pleasant.

1192 Market Street, Civic Center. Evening shows at 7:30pm. Matinees vary by production. Ticket prices from $50 to $200+. Same booking system as the Golden Gate: BroadwaySF.com or the shared box office.
Getting There
BART or Muni Metro to Civic Center station. The theater is directly across Market Street from the station exit. The Civic Center garage on McAllister offers convenient parking. Like the Golden Gate, the immediate neighborhood is the Tenderloin. Go directly to the theater from transit and you are fine.
