The Independent
The Verdict
"A Divisadero music venue with a capacity around 500 that hits the sweet spot between intimate and big enough to book great acts. The sound is clean and the sightlines are good throughout. The neighborhood has excellent pre-show dinner options on both sides of the street."
What you need to know
The Independent opened in 2004 on Divisadero Street and quickly became the room where bands play right before they get too big for it. At just over 500 capacity, the space is small enough that you can read the setlist taped to the stage floor. That size is the whole point.
What to Expect
The booking covers a wide range: indie rock, hip hop, electronic, folk, and the kind of acts your friend insists you need to hear. The sound system is well tuned for the room size, and the sightlines work from most angles, though the space narrows toward the back. The bar runs along one side and doesn’t require leaving the show to reach.
This is a standing room venue. The floor is flat, so taller people in front of you will matter. Arrive when doors open if you want a good spot near the stage.
Visiting
628 Divisadero Street, Western Addition (NoPa). Shows typically start between 8 and 9 PM. Tickets range from $15 to $40 for most acts, occasionally higher for bigger names. Buy through the venue’s website or the usual ticket platforms.
The Divisadero corridor has become one of the better restaurant streets in the city. Nopa, Nopalito, and The Mill are all within a few blocks if you want dinner before the show.
Getting There
The 24 Divisadero bus stops nearby. From downtown, the 5 Fulton runs along Fulton Street a few blocks north. Street parking is possible but competitive in the evenings. No dedicated lot.
Skip this if you need seating or prefer large production shows. This is a neighborhood club, and the appeal is exactly that.
