Day Trips North of San Francisco

Day Trips North of San Francisco

Cross the Golden Gate and the landscape shifts — vineyard-covered hills, fog-draped redwood canyons, and wild Pacific headlands. North is where the city gives way to California at its most cinematic.

Wine Country

Three distinct wine regions, each within easy reach. Napa Valley delivers grand estates and world-class Cabernets. Sonoma’s town square is ringed with tasting rooms and farm-to-table restaurants. Healdsburg is the insider pick — artisan boutiques, pinot noir, and a pace that makes you forget you left the city this morning.

Local tip: Skip Napa on weekends — Highway 29 traffic can double your drive. Sonoma and Healdsburg are less crowded and just as rewarding. Most tasting rooms charge $25 to $40, often waived with a bottle purchase.

🚗 1.5 hours

Point Reyes National Seashore

A windswept peninsula of wild beaches, sea cliffs, and roaming tule elk. The iconic lighthouse perches at the westernmost point — 308 steps down to one of the best whale-watching spots on the coast. Detour to Hog Island Oyster Co. on Tomales Bay for oysters shucked steps from the water.

Local tip: The lighthouse is open weekends and holidays only. Best whale watching is December through April. The Tomales Point Trail (9.4 mi) offers the best elk sightings. Bring layers — fog is relentless out here.

Redwood Forests

Muir Woods is the closest — a cathedral of ancient coast redwoods 45 minutes from downtown. Reservations are required and the main trails get crowded. For a quieter experience, drive further to Armstrong Redwoods near Guerneville or Samuel P. Taylor State Park in west Marin, where you might have entire groves to yourself.

Local tip: Book Muir Woods parking at GoMuirWoods.com well in advance. Or skip the car — the seasonal shuttle runs from Sausalito. Armstrong Redwoods has no reservation requirement and a fraction of the crowds.
