Breadbelly
The Verdict
"Go for the kaya toast and the kakiage sando. The Clement location has more neighborhood energy; Dogpatch is easier for parking and seating. Get there by 9am on weekends to avoid the wait."
What you need to know
Breadbelly opened in the Inner Richmond in December 2018 from a group of Atelier Crenn alums who started as a pop-up. The menu pulls from Asian and American breakfast traditions filtered through California ingredients. The kaya toast (milk bread with green pandan-coconut jam and flaky salt) is the signature. The New York Times named Breadbelly one of the 25 best restaurants in San Francisco. A second location opened at Pier 70 in Dogpatch.
The Food
Kaya toast is the order to start. Korean egg bread (gyeran bbang) reimagined as crumbly cornbread with a soft-boiled egg and chili. Kakiage shrimp sandos. House-baked milk bread, pastries, and a strong coffee program. Breakfast and lunch only.
The Space
Inner Richmond storefront with a counter, a few tables, and a constant flow of regulars. Casual, fast, and bright. The Pier 70 location in Dogpatch has more outdoor seating and benefits from the waterfront setting.
