Napa Valley: A Day in California Wine Country

Overview

Napa Valley is one of the most recognized wine regions in the United States. It combines well-known wineries, valley scenery, and a strong restaurant scene, which makes it a popular day trip from San Francisco.

Getting There

It’s about 1.5 hours from San Francisco via Highway 101 and Highway 29. Traffic on weekends can add 30 to 45 minutes, so leave early. If you don’t want to drive, wine country tours are widely available and let someone else handle the road.

What to Expect

Tastings at many Napa wineries run about $40 to $75 per person, and most require reservations. The big names are Opus One, Robert Mondavi, and Domaine Chandon. Marquee estates run higher: Robert Mondavi’s Oakville estate reopened in April 2026 after a renovation, with tastings from $60 to $150. For lower prices and smaller crowds, the family-owned estates along the Silverado Trail are a good option.

Where to Eat

Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa is a good lunch stop, with food stalls, oysters, cheese, and more wine. For a sit-down meal, Bistro Don Giovanni serves Italian-Napa cuisine with vineyard views.
