Legion of Honor Opens a Yearlong Joan Miró Artist Book Show on July 25
The Legion of Honor opens Miró: Proof Against All on Saturday, July 25, 2026, and keeps it up for a full year, through July 25, 2027. The show is in the museum’s Logan Gallery and is included with general admission.
The exhibition is built around a single book. À toute épreuve, published in Geneva by Gérald Cramer in 1958, pairs poems by the Surrealist writer Paul Éluard with 80 color woodcut prints by Joan Miró. Miró cut more than 230 woodblocks to produce them, and the prints run through the pages alongside Éluard’s text rather than sitting apart from it.
Why this copy
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco hold two copies of À toute épreuve in the Logan Collection of Illustrated Books, one bound and one unbound. According to the museum, the bound copy was the first book David and Reva Logan purchased for the collection.
The museum describes the book as the high point of Miró’s work as a book illustrator and sets it against his wider career in artistic publishing, tracing his printmaking processes and the printers, publishers, and writers who worked on such projects with him.
Planning a visit
The Legion of Honor is in Lincoln Park at 100 34th Avenue, at Clement Street, and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:15 pm. Because Proof Against All runs for a year, there is no calendar pressure on it. Two other shows at the same museum are on shorter clocks: Drawn to Venice, a survey of Venetian drawings and prints from the Renaissance through the Rococo, closes August 16, 2026, and The Etruscans: From the Heart of Ancient Italy closes September 20, 2026.
There is a two-day overlap worth knowing about if Venice is the draw. Monet and Venice closes at the de Young on July 26, the day after Miró opens across town at the Legion of Honor, so July 25 and 26 are the only dates on which the Monet show, Drawn to Venice, and Proof Against All are all on view at once.
