SFMOMA Extends Its Matisse ‘Femme au chapeau’ Show to September 27

SFMOMA has extended Matisse’s Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal to Sunday, September 27. The museum’s exhibition page, updated September 10, now gives the run as May 16 to September 27, 2026. The show had been listed to close today, September 13. Mission Local also reported the extension in its September museum roundup.

Two More Weekends, With a Catch

The extension adds two weekends, and both of them come with a restriction. SFMOMA is reserving the exhibition for members from 10 am to noon every Saturday and Sunday from September 12 through September 27, a members-only block the museum calls Member Last Looks. General ticket holders get in from noon on weekend days.

Weekdays are unrestricted. The show sits on Floor 4 and carries a surcharge on top of general admission: $10 on weekdays and $12 on weekends and holidays. Members pay nothing extra.

The Museum Is Closed September 14 to 16

Before you plan around the extra time, note that SFMOMA is closed to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, September 14, 15 and 16, for a private event. The Museum Store stays open to the public during those three days, entered from Third Street. Wednesday is a regular closure day anyway, so the closure removes two visiting days you would otherwise have had.

That leaves these visiting days before it closes: Thursday September 17 through Sunday September 20, Monday September 21 through Tuesday September 22, and Thursday September 24 through Sunday September 27.

What Is Still Running Alongside It

Three public programs remain on the calendar. A Modern Scandal: An Evening of Art Making runs Thursday, September 17, 6 to 8 pm. Watercolor Workshop: Feeling First, a Matisse Study is Sunday, September 20 at 2 pm. The Works on Paper Book Club takes up Francesca Wade’s Gertrude Stein: An Afterlife on Thursday, September 24 at 6 pm, which connects to the Steins who bought the painting on the closing day of the 1905 Salon d’Automne.

What the Show Assembles

The exhibition restages Gallery VII of the 1905 Salon d’Automne in Paris, the room where Matisse showed the portrait of his wife Amélie and where the critic Louis Vauxcelles called the painters fauves. Later rooms track the painting’s route from Paris to San Francisco and its effect on artists who came after, including the Bay Area Figurative painters Joan Brown, Richard Diebenkorn and David Park. Janet Bishop, the museum’s Thomas Weisel Family Chief Curator, organized it with Maria Castro and Alison Guh.

The painting itself belongs to SFMOMA and stays on the walls after September 27. What ends is the assembled context around it.

Getting there: Montgomery Street Station, served by BART and Muni Metro, is the closest rail stop, about three blocks north. The F Market and Wharves streetcar runs along Market Street from the same area.
