Hang Ah Tea Room opened in 1920 on Pagoda Place, a short dead-end alley off Sacramento Street, and is the oldest dim sum restaurant in the United States. The name translates roughly to fragrance, a reference to the incense maker that once occupied the site.
The room is small and the menu is traditional: har gow, siu mai, pork buns, potstickers, and chicken wings in a house sauce. Everything is made to order rather than wheeled around on carts. The restaurant has stayed in continuous operation for more than a century.
Most visitors walk past Pagoda Place without noticing it. Hang Ah is open daily for lunch and dinner, and takes cash and cards.
