The storefront at 575 Castro Street was Castro Camera, the shop Harvey Milk opened in 1972. It doubled as the headquarters for his political campaigns and as an informal community center for the growing gay population of the neighborhood, which Milk helped organize into a voting bloc.
Milk ran for office several times before winning a seat on the Board of Supervisors in 1977. The storefront now holds the Human Rights Campaign Action Center and store, with a plaque and a mural of Milk on the building. His apartment was upstairs.
