Clarion Alley
The Verdict
"Scrappier and more punk than Balmy Alley. Between Mission and Valencia, enter from either 17th or 18th Street. The art turns over fast so check back every few months."
What you need to know
The Punk One
Clarion Alley runs one block between Mission and Valencia Streets at 17th. The Clarion Alley Mural Project (CAMP) has organized community murals here since 1992, making it one of the longest-running mural projects in the city.
The vibe is different from Balmy Alley. Clarion is grittier, more contemporary, and changes faster. Murals address police brutality, housing displacement, queer identity, and whatever political crisis is happening this month. New work goes up regularly. Old work gets painted over.
What Makes It Worth It
The turnover means every visit is different. The quality is consistently high. CAMP curates who paints here, so the alley maintains a standard even as work rotates. Some of San Francisco’s best-known muralists started on these walls.
The alley is narrow and intimate. On a quiet morning, it feels like walking through someone’s visual diary of city life.
Pair it with Balmy Alley for the full Mission mural experience. Clarion is the newer, edgier counterpart.
