Muir Woods and Stinson Beach: A Marin Day Trip from San Francisco
Overview
This is the day trip we recommend most to visitors. You get ancient redwood forests, a winding drive over Mount Tamalpais, and a low-key beach town, all in one day and all within about an hour of the city.
The Route
Head north across the Golden Gate Bridge and take the Panoramic Highway exit. The drive to Muir Woods takes about 45 minutes without traffic. After the forest, continue over Mt. Tam to Stinson Beach, another 20 minutes of mountain-to-ocean views.
Morning: Muir Woods
Arrive early, by 8:30 AM if you can. Reservations are required for parking or shuttle access, and you book them in advance at gomuirwoods.com. The main loop trail is about a mile and takes 30 to 45 minutes. The Hillside Trail loop adds views of the canopy from above.
Afternoon: Stinson Beach
After the woods, head to Stinson Beach for lunch. Parkside Cafe serves tacos, seafood, and breakfast. Walk the beach and look for tide pools at the south end.
Getting There Without a Car
The Muir Woods Shuttle is Marin Transit Route 66/66F. It runs on weekends and holidays from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, so you can take the ferry from San Francisco to Larkspur and connect to the shuttle. Reserve a shuttle seat at gomuirwoods.com along with your park entry. Guided tours that include both stops are also available, so this is one of the few day trips you can do without renting a car.
