Day Trips South of San Francisco

Day Trips South of San Francisco

Highway 1 south of SF is one of the great American drives — clinging to sea cliffs above the Pacific, winding through surfing towns and past beaches that feel like the edge of the world.

🚗 40 minutes

Half Moon Bay

The easiest coastal escape from the city. A charming Main Street leads to blufftop trails, fresh seafood shacks, and wide sandy beaches. Perfect for a half-day trip when you need ocean air but don’t want to commit to a full adventure. In October, it hosts the famous Pumpkin Festival, and the Mavericks big-wave surf competition draws the world’s best.

🏄 Beaches 🦞 Seafood 🥾 Coastal Trails 🏄 Surfing

Local tip: Sam’s Chowder House has the best lobster roll on the coast. The Coastside Trail is flat and gorgeous for walking or biking. Go on a weekday — Highway 92 backs up badly on sunny weekends.

🚗 1.5 hours

Santa Cruz

A full day of California beach culture. The Beach Boardwalk is the last remaining seaside amusement park on the West Coast — and admission is free (rides cost extra). Beyond the boardwalk, there’s excellent surfing at Steamer Lane, a funky downtown with great bookstores and taco shops, and nearby redwood forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

🎢 Beach Boardwalk 🏄 Surfing 🌲 Redwoods 🛍 Downtown

Local tip: Take Highway 1 down (scenic, slower) and Highway 17 back (faster, through the mountains). Steamer Lane is a legendary surf break — great to watch even if you don’t surf. Don’t miss the Santa Cruz Wharf for seafood.

🚗 2.5 hours each way

Big Sur

The ultimate California coast drive. Highway 1 threads between towering sea cliffs and the Pacific through some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth. Bixby Bridge is the iconic photo stop. McWay Falls drops 80 feet onto a pristine beach. Nepenthe restaurant serves lunch with views that justify every mile of the drive.

Local tip: This is a long day — leave early and plan for at least 10 hours round trip. Gas stations are rare and expensive on Highway 1. Check road conditions before you go — landslides close sections regularly. Worth every minute.
