Rintaro
The Verdict
"Yakitori over binchotan and a flight of sake. Reserve via Resy. The fried chicken is widely considered one of the best in San Francisco."
What you need to know
Chef Sylvan Mishima Brackett opened Rintaro on 14th Street in the Mission in 2014, named after his Japanese grandfather. The restaurant serves Japanese izakaya food with California ingredients: yakitori, tempura, hand-cut soba noodles, and seasonal small plates. The wood-fired robata and bar seating overlook the open kitchen.
The Food
Yakitori cooked over binchotan charcoal, tempura made to order, sashimi from California waters, hand-cut soba, and ondoki (small plates that change with the season). The Japanese fried chicken is widely considered one of the best versions in San Francisco.
Sake program is deep with bottles from small Japanese producers.
